Junk foods by definition are usually high in fats, sugars, salt and calories and contain very little nutritional value. That makes me wonder why we like them so much. For me, it is because the salt and sugar put my taste buds into over drive and I think I’m being comforted, except my hips and belly hang on to that comfort for all the world to see!
I am taking my grandson to the Hemlock Little World’s Fair today. I have grown out of my desire to go on rides and he doesn’t like them so we are good on that point. We will spend lots of time in the animal barns (so I can pet the critters) to see all the different kinds of cows, pigs, and sheep. 4-H clubs are still prevalent in the rural area just south of where we live, and the members show off their pets at the fair. We will also investigate the quilt exhibit. He has a good appreciation for color and workmanship as he and I have made a quilt together.
While we are at the Fair, we will have lunch. This will prove interesting because William is not a hotdog or hamburger eater. He will probably pick chicken-on-a-stick and fried dough. He does love his sugar. Those two things sound pretty good to me too and maybe a strawberry smoothie to drink. I better make sure my wallet has enough cash in it before I leave as he might want to try to win a stuffed animal. I think he likes them better than he likes food.
Being this day falls on Friday this year, and it’s summer time in the U.S. I imagine lots of people are getting ready for picnics, festivals, graduation parties, weddings and other group functions on the weekend. Thus, junk food will be plentiful. Maybe not at the wedding…. Anyway, enjoy your function, enjoy the junk food, then go for a long walk or do some yard work so you don’t feel guilty about what you ate. Oh, and to those people that can eat whatever they want, whenever they want because their metabolism lets them, I envy you.
