Good Anytime

Do you know anyone that doesn’t like Pizza? I don’t think I do. It’s one of those foods that if you don’t like it the “normal” way with red sauce, pepperoni and cheese, you can change to white sauce and all veggies. You can get the crust thick or thin, you can add any topping you want, and in certain stores get the crust gluten-free. It’s a satisfying dish for everyone as long as your group can agree on which kind to order or make when there are a bunch of you. Continue reading “Good Anytime”

Made From Milk

I was recently in a friend’s home and we got on the subject of milk. Her comment, with a bit of a snobbish air, was, “Milk is only for babies. No adult should drink it because of how it is digested.” I didn’t know the explanation of  “how” so didn’t argue. I did have a private chuckle when she informed me we were having pizza for lunch with a healthy fruit and yogurt salad. I thought, “Do you know what pizza cheese and yogurt are made from?” I’m still wondering why eating a milk food product is different from drinking the base item because I was afraid to ask. Maybe I’ll bring up the subject another time, in another way, to see if I can get an explanation, perhaps next summer when I invite her for a drive to get ice cream. How We Met

Nachos have a special place in my husband’s and my history. They were what we ate the day we met. It was the last Wednesday in April, 2001. There were five of us, sitting on a bar patio because it was one of those springtime 80 degree days. Funny part of the experience, we all were eating the jalapenos. Outcome of the event, there have only been a handful of days since then that my husband and I have not at least spoken on the phone, if we weren’t together physically. It was a spicy hot beginning. Let’s Party

If you look at the National Day of Calendar for today it will let you know you should not be at work, you should be at a party. It is National Chili Dog Day, National Scotch Day, National Refreshment Day, National Crème Brulee Day, and National New Jersey Day, hence the party should be on the Jersey shore.  Wouldn’t that be fun, to have the time and money to drop everything and head to the Atlantic Ocean because a calendar gives you the idea to do so. “They were awful!”

It’s National Pizza Party Day. Really? I know a family that has pizza every Friday night for dinner. Does that make every Friday night a party? I doubt it. Who needs a party to order pizza. We probably have it three times a month, and it’s usually on a night I have been “busy” doing something else instead of making dinner for my hubby who still works lots of hours. The definition of busy could be anything from sewing, writing my blog, shopping or having lunch with the girls.

I have heard that pizza isn’t really Italian, but the National Day of calendar gives facts that says it is. It also says the original pizza used only mozzarella cheese, mainly the highest quality buffalo mozzarella variant which was produced in the surroundings of Naples, Italy. The first United States pizza establishment opened in 1905 in New York’s Little Italy. I guess we’ll give the Italians credit for pizza without argument.

It was estimated that the annual production of pizza cheese in the United States in 1997 was 2 billion pounds. That’s one heck of a lot of cheese. How much of that was consumed at your house?

I was the youngest of four girls, so from 7th through 12th grade, I lived at home with just my parents. I’m a people person so on many Saturday nights there were a few extra girls overnight. I liked to eat even then, so for a snack I would make a Chef Boy-ar-dee Pizza from a box. There was a package of dough mix that only needed water added, a can of sauce, and a package of very dry parmesan like cheese. I would add pepperoni or mushrooms sometimes. In my memory it seems like we usually ate most of it. I now have lunch about once a month with one of the girls involved. She admitted to me one day, “Remember those pizzas you used to make. They were awful, but you liked them so we all ate it.” I wish you could have seen the look on her face when she told me that. It appeared she could still taste how awful they were. We laughed and talked about what good memories those pajama parties left us with.

Next time you have pizza, don’t just have it for supper. Call some friends, get out the cards or a board game, and turn it into a party. Oh, and by all means, order a good one with gooey thick hot cheese and the toppings of your choice.

 

 

The National Day of Calendar tells me that Alfredo di Lelio created fettuccine alfredo for his wife when she had no appetite after having their first child. It says it was noodles, cheese and butter. Yum. There is a recipe you can click on, so I did. To my dismay it was made with store-bought jars of sauce. Not in my kitchen! I’ll make mine from scratch, thank you, so much less salt that way! And adding cream is a must. If one is going to eat alfredo sauce, it might as well be the best it can be. You can always add some chicken and vegetables to make yourself think of it as a more healthy meal.

About thirty years ago, my daughter and I went to Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada for the day. Back in the days you didn’t need a passport to cross the border. I don’t remember what the reason for our trip was, but when we came back across the border, the guard asked us if we had bought anything during our stay. I’m way too honest a person; fearing he would tell me I couldn’t take it into the states, I answered, “We have leftover Fettuccine Alfredo in a to-go box.” He got this serious look on his face and asked from which restaurant. I told him, Mama Mia’s. He got a big grin and said something to the effect of, “At least you knew where to get the best. Have a good day.” We are still talking about his comment.

I just looked up on Trip Advisor to find out if Mama Mia’s is still open. It is, but the reviews weren’t all that favorable. Still, I would go back just for the good memory. My daughter is now 42 and she does have a passport. Maybe we should go for a ride and have Fettuccine Alfredo for lunch one more time.

 

Cheese Please

It’s National Cheese Lover’s Day. The information for this day says there are over 1400 different types of cheese. Wow! I would have never guessed that. Maybe I should pay closer attention the next time I walk through the cheese section at the grocery store. (Wegman’s, here in western New York state! Lucky me!)

My taste buds were imagining a Swiss and mushroom omelet for breakfast,  the American toasted cheese sandwich for lunch (with tomato soup), and the baked Brie and raspberry jam that the neighbor serves when we play cards. I use blue cheese,  Asiago, or 5 year aged extra sharp cheddar each morning when I make my husband’s salad that he takes to work for lunch. Cheese can enhance any meal, any time of day.

Next time you get to peruse a salad bar, check out the number of cheeses, and don’t forget the cottage cheese that is sometimes in with the desserts. So many cheeses, so little time. I think I need a snack.
