According to the national Day of Calendar, whether it’s a crossword, jigsaw, trivia, word searches, brain teasers or Sudoku puzzles, they put our minds to work. Studies have found that when we work on a jigsaw puzzle, we use both sides of the brain, and spending time daily working on puzzles improves memory, cognitive function and problem-solving skills.

So what’s your favorite kind of puzzle? I’ve never become a fan of crossword puzzles even though I have a decent size vocabulary. A lot of the clues are from TV shows, history and music I am not familiar with. Plus they use archaic words or meanings I also don’t know. Now a Sudoku is another story. I used to do those in pencil and erase until I got it all right. I realized that was a bit obsessive so now I use pen and if I’m not correct on the first go, I let it be all right. I don’t have to be right all the time. I still wonder where my mistake was, but after all it’s just a puzzle.

I’ve never been very good at Trivia because I have my brain filled with quilting facts, not tidbits about what the rest of the world thinks is important or interesting. Some might say my puddle of experience isn’t very big but I wouldn’t agree because I’ve done a lot of things, just don’t remember a lot of information that I don’t find useful.

I am a big fan of the TV show Survivor. I enjoy watching the interaction of the people and figuring the brain teasers. (I will admit I would expect to be voted off first because I tend to be pretty bossy and can’t keep my mouth shut.) The producers come up with some really good puzzles. I’m always ready to challenge my brain. I actually find it fun.

Jigsaw puzzles have always been a part of my life. There was often one spread out on our dining room table when I was a kid. I like to see how the colors blend and change and wonder how the machine cuts the pieces right on the line where that change takes place. I would like to see if that happens by chance at the factory or if someone manipulates the cutter to just the right spot.

Whatever kind of puzzle you like, today is the day we celebrate them. If you don’t have time to do one, tell me about which one you like best.
